Special Event : Criss-cross riding

JoensPy, is organizing a week-long cycling event on the occasion of North Karelia Day (maakuntapäivä), with the theme of get moving.

The event is divided into two main parts:

from Sunday 13th of August to Friday 18th of August, a set of orienteering maps will be available on an app. There will be different types of maps, (easy in the city, more challenging in the forest, etc..) so there will be something for families but also advanced riders. On Sunday 13th from 1 pm to 4 pm there will be a demo at the Areena (in the lobby, Voitto meeting room), where we will explain the app and guide users on a short, easy ride, accessible by city bike. There will be also be low-threshold rides organized during this week.

On Saturday 19th of August from 11 am to 3 pm, there will be a final event in Lykynlampi (accessible by bus, but obviously by bike too…). There will be: low-threshold rides on MTB (one also accessible for kids, one for more advanced riders), gravel group rides (one open to all, one only for women), two orienteering maps open only this day until 2 pm, local companies with test bikes and e-bikes, lectures (in Finnish) about nutrition for athletes and planning training, small repair workshop and advice provided by Pyörävarikko cycle shop, and an open-air second hand flea market of sports goods (if the weather is good).

If you complete at least one orienteering track, you can participate in a lottery!

in winter time (so, kind of long period from October to April) indoor riding in the Joensuu Areena Sunday mornings

Mountain biking

in this field you can participates to

MTB classes for children and youths
low treshold and group rides
group rides with lamp (in automn/early winter)
benevol work to maintain the DH tracks in Pärnävaara and the technical tracks of Utra
MTB-cup (in 2023 in association with Kuopio and Iisalmi cycling clubs : Savo-Karjala MTB cup)

Where to cycle

MTB

There is a nice network of trails around Joensuu, but also eleswhere in North Karelia

The tracks of a Jaama Trail, Harjupolut, Kontiopolut, Lykynpolut and Kinttupollut offer a continuous network of well-marked trails in Joensuu, Kontiolahti and Liperi municipalities of more than 200km!

In Kitee (accessible by train from Joensuu), Tohmajärvi and Kesälahti you can find the Karelianpolut-trails

We also recommend the application Trail map, where Joensuu region paths are classified by difficulties. You can see also heat maps on a 3D topographic map etc.

In Winter time thew is short trails maintained in Pärnävaara, Lykynlampi and from the Biathlon stadium (also used by pedestrians)
